Thomas Ryan Photography Tips & News
Melbourne - June 2015
I was on a commercial shoot in Far North Queensland, but stopped over in Melboune on the way. Anyone with a love of architecture, Melbourne is a must do! I am always amazed at the constant change happening, cranes in the sky, buildings being demolished, buildings that in a short period of time come in go in a single lifetime. The streets are bustling, there are buildings and places to explore, these are some of the images I made on a short afternoon.
In November 2014 I undertook a major project in Brisbane, Queensland. Kim Wilson recieved "The Brisbane Lord Mayor’s Helen Taylor Research Award for Local History" to document Brisbane's Art Deco architecture. In 6 days I photographed 15 Art Deco buildings from bridges, commercial buildings, hotels, and even access to the tarmac to shoot an Art Deco airport! The brief was to shoot 15 buildings for use in her project, some landscape and others portrait format. Planning for weather, travel and the light were all considered and well planned. The images below the the final result. It was a delight to work Kim Wilson on her project.
In May 2014 I had the opportunity to photograph William Bowden's Mastering studio. As a Mastering Engineer William has worked with many artists including Goyte, in which he received a Grammy Award for mixing their album "Making Mirrors". As part of this photography brief William wanted a combination of studio images and portraits that he could use on his website. Click here to view the project.
I have some exciting news - I've been selected as one of the finalists for "Australia's Top Emerging Photographers 2014" as run by Capture Magazine. I entered the architecture section. The competition covered 9 categories and there were some 4600 images submitted. To be considered you had to submit a portfolio of 6 images, click here to check out the entries I submitted.
